1911 Handgun

The 1911 was conceived in the 1890’s, and was adopted for US military use in 1911. This .45ACp handgun was decommissioned in 1985 in favor of the Beretta 92 9mm. The 1911 continues to be a favorite handgun of many people around the world. It has been adapted and recreated in multiple sizes and calibers.

The most common sizes that you might see include:

  • Government Model which has a full size frame,  5″ barrel, and a 7 or 8 round magazine
  • Commander Model which has a full size frame,  4.25″ barrel, and a 7-8 round magazine
  • CCO Model which has a short frame, 4.25″ barrel, and typically houses 6-7 rounds in a magazine
  • Officers Model which has a short frame, 3.5″ barrel, and typically houses 6-7 rounds in a magazine

Occasionally you will see other names than what is listed above. Kimber lists their 1911 style firearms as the following:

5″ ‘Custom’      4″ ‘Pro’      3″ ‘Ultra’

The Officer’s model is also occasionally seen as a ‘Mirco’. In addition, there are also variants including different calibers. Some more common calibers include the  9mm, .22 rim fire, and the .38 Super.
