Galco CCP OWB Holster Review

Galco boasts its new CCP (Concealed Carry Paddle) is widely considered to be the finest professional-carry paddle holster in existence… offers all the features expected in a modern defensive holster: open top, secure retention, combat grip accessibility, and covered trigger guard. It adds the convenience of Galco’s unsurpassed adjustable paddle design, with unlimited range of holster angle options. That’s a bold statement. The adjustable cant is mildly reminiscent of the Blackhawk SERPA thigh holster design, allowing you to adjust to a vertical through FBI cant by the turn of an adjustment screw. One perk is the ability to adjust the angle for crossdraw carrying. The belt slot fits a 1.75″ belt. This adaptability does deserve a tip of the...

Galco Gladius Holster Review

The Galco Gladius is Galco’s continuation of the Side Snap Scabbard (SSS) holster. Changes include a more ‘minimalist’ look which allow the compatibility of different length model firearms (i.e. Commander and Officer 1911s), along with a thumb break. The Gadius holster does not have a retention screw like its predecessor. The cant and strong molding remain the same, as well as accepting belts up to 1.5″. Partially due to the thumb break, Galco does not offer this model for revolvers. The author’s negative thoughts were made clear in the aforementioned post, and Galco’s remake of the Gladius is nothing to be impressed about. I’d much rather keep my fold-able portrait of Benjamin Franklin, or spend it instead on a...

Galco Combat Master Holster Review

Galco’s Combat Master is a well executed OWB holster. It’s double stitching and long width allow even distribution and a tight fit utilizing a pair of 1.75 belt slots. There are no fancy tightener or reinforced mouth, just thick leather, thread, and tight molding. The holster rides high with a slight cant allowing for the concealment of larger firearms, and ease of draw. On a personal note, this is the holster I use when shooting IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) sanctioned events. After the initial break in period of a month, the Combat Master has become an extension of myself. I confidently know where my firearm is, every time I draw. Of the boxes of holsters that I have amassed,...

Galco Side Snap Scabbard SSS OWB Holster Review

Galco’s Side Snap Scabbard (SSS) OWB holster (not to be mistaken for the Desantis Scabbard) is a take on the fad of snap loops. In lieu of belt slots, two fastened leather strips are joined by a snap to give the user a convenience factor not seen in traditional slots. This design first surfaced commercially around 2004 and has yet to become overly popular. Although easier to don and doff, side snaps tend to be less conforming to the waist, offer the chance of unsnapping, and lack the clean aesthetics wearers are used to. With that said, the Side Snap Scabbard offers quality leather, a retention screw, and a high gloss finish. Unlike forgiving belt slots which commonly fit...

Galco Avenger OWB Holster Review

Galco Avenger Belt Holster The Galco Avenger Belt holster is based off a traditional Askins design (there are some great biographies about the wild Col. Charles Askins). The Askin’s design of today commonly features a retention screw. The chief complaint is it’s lack to pull the holster close to the body due to the loop behind the gun. This restricts the size of gun that can be conveniently concealed. Because of this, the Galco Avenger is recommended for small to small/medium sized pistols. A subcompact 1911, Glock, or Sig would see the most benefit with this design. The Galco Avenger is designed with double stitching on the trigger side, and the leather wraps around the slide, doubling at the...

Gould & Goodrich Gold Line Pancake Holster Review

Gould & Goodrich Gold Line At first glance, the Gold Line holster is a spitting image of the Blackhawk CQC 3-Slot Pancake Holster. However, a second glance reveals a more stylish, and better quality OWB 3 slot holster. The Gould and Goodrich Gold Line 3 Slot (the Gold Line is a complete line of authentic leather goods including an IWB, ankle, and SOB holster, as well as magazine holsters and belts) pancake OWB holster designed with a thumb break, double inside line stitching, and strong molding. Aesthetically speaking, the G&G Gold Line looks like your stereotypical Federal Agent holster seen in movies. Looks of course, are mooted if functionality is sub-par.  Just grasp a Gould’s holster, and you’ll be...

Blackhawk CQC 3-Slot Pancake Holster Review

Blackhawk CQC Holster Review Don’t confuse the Blackhawk CQC 3 slot holster with the Blackhawk CQC Serpa Holster. This is a leather pancake holster with the three slot design for adjustable cants. It does not have a mechanical retention system like the carbon fiber CQC Serpa, but rather this Blackhawk leather holster relies on a thumb break for retention. The CQC Holser features curved belt slots which help to place pressure on the belt, pinning it in place and keep it from sliding- an interesting, unique, and practical feature that is not commonly seen. Opting for no cant by choosing the lower belt slot does present with some difficulties. Choosing this option, the holster rides extremely high and in...

Bianchi 5 Black Widow Hip Holster Review

Bianchi 5 Black Widow Holster The Bianchi Black Widow is the ideal choice for those looking for a high riding, stable and easily concealable pancake holster. The Black Widow delivers double stitching, two standard 1.75″ belt loops, and a compact design that contours to the body. The Black Widow Holster has well placed double stitching that conforms nicely to the gun. Aesthetically it would be nice to see the molding to be more sharp, but it does not effect the performance of the holster. The belt slots are well balanced and lend to a gentle, but much needed cant. The thumb break and open muzzle may be options that some do not care for. With a durable, thick gun...

Safariland 328 Pancake Holster Review

Safariland 328 Pancake Here is a 3-slot pancake holster from Safariland.  The Model 328 pancake holster is created with a thumb break, suede lining, and traditional 1.75″ belt slots. The additional belt slot on the slide side of the holster allows the user to determine the degree of cant. At first glance, this holster appears to be well built. The stitching is close to the gun, and the suede lining gives the Safariland holster a feel of royalty. Unfortunately it is very difficult to marry the thick vegetable tanned leather to another, thinner material- in this case the suede. This discrepancy culminates in a rough burnished edge, giving the user a scratch upon every movement if the holster is...

Bianchi 59 Special Agent Paddle Holster Review

Bianchi 59 Special Agent Holster   The Bianchi 59 Paddle Holster is a hybrid leather with a waffle pattern neoprene lined plastic paddle. Bianchi’s patented paddle is adjustable and does rotate to allow for varying cants and carry positions. The griped texture of the paddle as well as its length does lend ability for the holster to be comfortable, light, and stable. With the thumb break and re-enforced sweat guard, this is a great holster if you do not want to deal with a belt. Even at $60-$84 this is a bargain of a holster if you are in a position where you are taking the holster on and off often. Here is an Amazon link to the Bianchi...

Galco Fletch High Ride Holster Review

Galco F.L.E.T.C.H. High Ride Holster Galco’s Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Holster (F.L.E.T.C.H.) Holster  looks as though it issued to every Federal Agent in every movie. There is a reason for that. With its close and bright stitching, practical design and cant, the Galco Fletch Holster is practical and overall a great holster. The Galco Fletch Holster is a very popular model for Galco, who states the holster is made of premium saddle leather. The Fletch boasts a slightly reinforced back thumb break (you can see the continued stitching in the picture), two rows of tight stitching, and two 1.75″ belt slots. The slots are placed as to allow the firearm to ride slightly elevated, and the wide placement...

Desantis Scabbard Pancake Holster Review

Desantis Scabbard Holster Review The Desantis Scabbard with thumb break hosts an adjustable retention screw, precise molding, bright stitching, and an additional belt slot. For those unfamiliar with reasoning for an additional belt slot, no- it isn’t a mistake. The reason for the extra slot on the Scabbard Holster is to give the wearer a choice for the cant of the holster. If the belt is placed through the bottom one, the holster will ride higher and have less cant. This additional slot is also known as a three slot model. The belt slots are the standard 1.75″, and the holster is available for many types of guns. Upon first use, the Desantis was rather snug, but after some...

Bianchi Carrylok OWB Holster Review

Bianchi Carrylok Holster Review   This holster is designed with the Bianchi Carrylok. It is a plastic retention devise which Blackhawk has tried to combat with their less successful Serpa holster. The Carrylok seems to be more ergonomic and in addition is encased in leather, as opposed to the Serpa. While the holster’s mouth is not reinforced, and the stitching is mildly wide, the holster does have some strong points. For the potential firearms carrier who is worried of being disarmed by another, this may help ease their qualms. Some argue that the Bianchi Carrylok holster has multiple points of failure, and may cause the gun to retain holstered. The author suggests if you can stay on the lower end...

Bianchi Minimalist OWB Holster Review

Bianchi Minimalist Holster Review The Bianchi OWB Leather Holster is well defined by its name-minimal. The leather does cover the necessary areas of the gun, and extends far enough to distribute the weight appropriately. With all Bianchi products, you can expect a stiff and hardened leather holster. It is evident the molding was with a commercial vacuum, leaving out the perfection of a hand crafted holster. The retention system, made up of a loop and O-ring, does not appear to be of the highest quality and will likely be the first failing point of the Bianchi Minimalist. The stitching appears rushed and the holster relies on the forming for the pistol retention. This is clearly evident in the picture....
